EU "Determined" To Sign Ukraine Deal, Fule Flies To Kiev

Thu, 21st Nov 2013 11:51

BRUSSELS (Alliance News) - The European Union's top official for neighbourhood policy is set to travel back to Ukraine on Thursday afternoon, with his spokesman insisting that the bloc is "determined" to sign a landmark agreement on closer ties with the country.

EU Commissioner Stefan Fule will be meeting with representatives from the Ukrainian authorities, opposition and civil society during his time in Kiev, his spokesman said - the second time this week that he visits Ukraine.

"This trip is part of the ongoing efforts to stress the determination of the EU to have the signature of the association agreement, provided Ukraine delivers," Peter Stano told journalists in Brussels. "We are ready to help Ukraine to do its part."

Stano declined to comment on whether the chances for a signature have been compromised by the Ukrainian parliament's failure to allow jailed former premier Yulia Tymoshenko to get medical treatment abroad. dpa amh mga
