Israeli Police Raid Live Palestinian Television Broadcast

Fri, 6th Jun 2014 11:54

Jerusalem (Alliance News) - Israeli police raided a Palestinian television studio in East Jerusalem during a live broadcast of a popular morning show on Friday, according to Palestine Television.

The incident took place at the offices of Palmedia on the Mount of Olives while the programme Good Morning Jerusalem was being broadcast on the state-owned channel, which is based in Ramallah.

Presenter May Abu Assab announced on air that she had to stop the broadcast because staff were being held by police.

The Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate condemned the raid as "a violation of freedom of opinion, expression and journalistic work."

Two staff members were detained and held for questioning, but later released.

Israeli police officials were not immediately available to comment.

Palestinian staff at the media centre said the Israeli police claimed the broadcasts were illegal.

The incident comes ahead of planned Palestinian demonstrations protesting the anniversary of the war that led to Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories in 1967.

Tensions are also on the rise after the Palestinians formed a unity government comprised of technocrats, which has brought together the rival Fatah and Hamas factions.

The US and Europe have rejected calls by Israel to boycott the new government because of the Islamist Hamas movement's involvement.

This week, Israel announced that it would be building thousands of new homes in Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem and on the West Bank.
